  2. Moeran certainly was in their league in his best work, and both the Cello Concerto and the Serenade belong in that category. Composed for his wife, Peers Coetmore, the concerto is suffused with the spirit of Irish folk song, but also contains an edge to the harmony that places it far beyond the droopy musings of the English “cow pat” school.
  3. Moeran conceived the wistfully lyrical Cello Concerto (arguably his supreme achievement) in for his wife, the Irish cellist Peers Coetmore. Cogently plotted and scored with canny lightness of touch, it’s full of the most heart-stoppingly beautiful inspiration, which in turn irresistibly evokes the glorious coastal landscape of the composer’s beloved County Kerry.
  4. Guy Johnston (cello) Rebekah Coffey (soprano) Ulster Orchestra/JoAnn Falletta rec. Ulster Hall, Belfast, UK, 6 February (Cello Concerto); 5 February DDD NAXOS [] Moeran wrote three concertante works: two concertos – one each for violin and for cello. Of the three the Cello Concerto always struck me as somewhat.
  5. Give props first of all to American conductor JoAnn Falletta, who here masters works outside her American music specialty, several of them fairly complex. None of the works by English-Irish composer E.J. Moeran this Naxos release is a world premiere, but none is exactly common. All were worth a Brand: Naxos.
  6. JoAnn Falletta is an American conductor who, though known primarily for her incisive interpretations of American music (contemporary and earlier works, including many compositions by female composers), has developed a broad repertory over the years, taking in many of the standards by Mozart, Beethoven, Debussy, Ravel, Rachmaninov, Prokofiev, and Britten, as well as those of lesser currency by.
  7. Moeran: Cello Concerto - Serenade - CD. JoAnn Falletta, Guy Johnston, Ulster Orchestra. The Cello Concerto is one of Anglo-Irish composer EJ Moeran's most important works. Composed in , its deft scoring and memorable melodic material mark it as a work of his maturity. At its heart is the raptly lyrical and profoundly felt slow movement.

  9. Moeran's linear style is very suited to the instrument, it often seems to me that all of his works seem to have originated from doodlings on a 'cello! JoAnn Falletta is as on the other Naxos Moeran disc a wonderfully inspired conductor, and Guy Johnston's 'cello playing is masterly, and haunting and breathes with the soul of Moeran/5(16).
  10. Apr 25,  · The Symphony in G minor of is generally regarded as Moeran's finest orchestral work, but here, Guy Johnston and the Ulster Orchestra under JoAnn Falletta make a strong case for the concerto.
